HoyaHoops.com's Georgetown Report: "Classic" Games

snapshot_2009-12-10_00-40-02With the start of Big East play rapidly approaching, the Georgetown Hoyas entered the most difficult stretch of their non-conference schedule this week with two games against ranked opponents.  The Hoyas faced off against Butler earlier in the week and now turn their attention to the Washington Huskies.  We'll recap the former and preview the latter for you.

Tuesday, the Hoyas defeated the Butler Bulldogs(#22 AP/20 ESPN#) 72-65 in the Jimmy V Classic.  Georgetown took a commanding 17 point lead early in the second half, but sloppy play allowed Butler to creep back into the game.  Fortunately, the Hoyas were able to hold on, and despite some anxious moments, the game was never quite within reach for the Bulldogs.  Georgetown committed 21 turnovers on the night but atoned for their offensive miscues with defensive dominance, holding Butler to a lowly 31% from the field, and forcing reigning Horizon Player of the Year Matt Howard into a miserable shooting night, making only one of his nine field goal attempts.

HoyaHoops.com Georgetown Report: Still Perfect

131-mount_st_marys_georgetown_basketball.sff.embedded.prod_affiliate.56Another week has passed, and the Georgetown Hoyas are still undefeated, though that's not surprising.  Their two wins this week came at home against inferior opponents, giving the team a chance to work on its offense without any real fear of losing the game.  It's a standard practice for most top-flight schools, and while the games can be boring at times, what they lack in excitement they make up for in insight

On Saturday, the Hoyas played the Lafayette Leopards and showed that they know how to score points.  The final score was 97-64, with six Hoyas in double figures.  A fear for some Georgetown fans recently has been three-point shooting.  There is no denying Georgetown's inside presence with Greg Monroe, and Austin Freeman and Chris Wright can get to the basket, but shooting has been a question mark, especially with the departure of last year's leading three-point shooter DaJuan Summers. However, Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson are answering the call, as the two went 7-10 from beyond the arc against the Leopards.  And when the outside shots are falling, it opens the game up for Monroe and Julian Vaughn inside.

greg-monroe-10For those of you who have been focusing on the Redskins' record or the Wizards' woes, you may have forgotten all about the start of college basketball season.  Well, we over at HoyaHoops.com are happy to fill you in on what you've missed.

The Georgetown Hoyas are coming off their worst season since John Thompson III took over for Craig Esherick in 2004, but with the Hoyas returning four starters - one of them being last season's Big East Rookie of the Year Greg Monroe - the team looks to turn things around and prove that last year's performance was just a blip on the radar.

Georgetown has started the season 3-0, but their wins have not come in convincing style. It's still a little too early to know what these performances say about the team as a whole, but there may be some trends developing.  Let's take a look.

We are currently looking for a writer to cover the Georgetown Hoyas. Ideally we are looking for a current blog, or independent writer to compile a weekly Hoya report. If there is anyone who is more interested in simply being a Georgetown columnist, we would also be interested.
